THE THIRD-COUNTRY MIGRATION(REFUGEES, ASYLUM SEEKERS,…) STARTED OVER THE LAST DECADES BECAUSE OF THE CRISES IN SOME AFRICAN AND ASIAN COUNTRIES. ITALY AND GREECE WERE THE FIRST TO FACE THE PROBLEM. YEAR AFTER YEAR IT HAS REACHED ENORMOUS PROPORTION OVERFLOWING IN EVERY EUROPEAN COUNTRY. NOWADAYS EUROPE IS FACING A SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CRISES. THE LACK OF MONEY, OF JOB, THE FEAR OF LOOSING THE OWN CULTURAL IDENTITY HAS LED PEOPLE TO SEE THE DIVERSITY WITH SUSPICION. SO THE QUESTION WAS:” HOW TO SHARE OUR LAND WITHOUT THINKING OF IMMIGRANTS LIKE A DANGER?”

OUR SCHOOL HAS TRIED TO FIND AN ANSWER REINFORCING INCLUSION, ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP, TOLERANCE, MAKING OUR PUPILS ABLE TO LOOK AT DIVERSITY AS WEALTH.

EVERY YEAR THE TEACHERS DEVELOP PROJECTS INVOLVING FOREIGN STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT CULTURE, RELIGION, FOOD AND CLOTHING SO THEY CAN REALIZE THAT :

“ PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME NEEDS GETTING SATISFACTION IN DIFFERENT WAYS “.

FOR INSTANCE THE PROJECT “COOKING TOGETHER” INVOLVED STUDENTS’ PARENTS. THEY EVERY FORTNIGHT COOKED AND SHARED THEIR TYPICAL DISHES. THIS EXPERIENCE GAVE PARENTS, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THE CHANCE TO “PUT A FOOT” IN OTHER CULTURES
MULTICULTURALISM & LIVING WITH DIVERSITY

Multiculturality must enrich our lives through identity aspects changes, through dialogue and involvement of all multicultural community’s members. From our point of view multiculturality means more than a simple juxtaposition of cultures in the same area; it also means a symbiotic relationship in which the minority ethnic groups must keep alive their own identity, being tolerated and accepted by the majority.

We do not have refugees / immigrants in our school, but most of our pupils parents work abroad. They brought their children with them, for a while. Some of them remain there, part of them come back, in our country, because they didn’t integrate. For the moment, they are in their relatives’ care and during the holidays they visit their parents. From abroad, they bring aspects of other civilization and share them with their colleagues. Their stories, habits awake the interest of other pupils.

The forms of intercultural education don’t have to be limited in formal circumstances; they have to be conceived and practised beyond the schoolar area, at family level, other social groups level, at institutional level, or at community level. Concerning didactic methodology, some procedures are important, those which imply activity and participation, combined creatively, so that the result is an intercultural behaviour. The development of e-Twining or Erasmus+ projects, using new technologies, the involvment in partnerships at local community, interviews investigations, roles interprtations, reading bilingual magazines for children, debates on different cases, discutions about issues with an impact over school and community life, exercises of constructive and critic thoughts having as guiding marks media articles, reading about humans rights and fundamental freedoms accesible to their ages, events which invite to meditation and taking position over the major human problems, colaboration with non-govermental organisations, these are some of the activities with a huge impact on different ethnic groups, to bring distance/farness closer, to stimulate communication, to make the knowledge more sensible, unifying it, without decreasing its identity. Thus, multiculturalism of our contemporary world could change into interculturalism, as an imperative of the world we are living in, a world which should promote the dialogue of cultures, tolerance, mutual respect, diversity’s harmony, peace
